This is the question every Indian IT professional, nurse, engineer, and accounting graduate eventually faces: Canada or Australia?
Both are English-speaking, points-based immigration countries with large Indian communities. Both offer free/subsidized healthcare, safe cities, and clear pathways to permanent residency. On paper, they look interchangeable. In practice, they are very different places to build a life.
This guide compares them across every dimension that matters to Indians moving abroad — using data, not opinion. All scores are from WhereNext's seven-dimension framework, and you can run your own comparison using our Canada vs Australia comparison tool.

Run a detailed Canada vs Australia comparisonImmigration: The Real Differences
Canada: Express Entry
Canada's Express Entry is the gold standard for skilled immigration. You create an online profile, get scored on CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System), and if your score clears the draw cutoff, you get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. The entire process takes about 6 months.
- Minimum to qualify: 67/100 on the FSW points grid (age, education, experience, language, adaptability). Most Indians clear this easily.
- Competitive CRS cutoff:Recent draws have been in the 470-510 range. A 30-year-old with a Master's, 3 years experience, and IELTS 8.0 scores around 470-490.
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP): Getting a provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points — virtually guaranteeing selection. Smaller provinces (Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia) are easier to get nominated from.
- No job offer needed: You can apply purely on your profile. A job offer adds CRS points but is not mandatory.
- Cost: CAD 1,365 per person (application + right of PR fee). Plus IELTS (~₹15K), WES credential evaluation (~₹25K), and police clearance (~₹500). Total: roughly ₹1.2-1.5 lakh per person.
Australia: SkillSelect + Points Test
Australia's system looks similar on the surface — submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), get scored on points, receive an invitation. But the execution is different:
- Minimum points: 65, but the effective cutoff for most occupations is 80-90+. Indians in popular occupations (software engineering, accounting) face fierce competition and may wait 12-18 months for an invitation.
- Skills assessment: Your qualifications must be assessed by the relevant authority (ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineers). This takes 2-3 months and costs AUD 500-800.
- State nomination (subclass 190): Adds 5 points. States like South Australia, Tasmania, and NT are more accessible but require you to live and work in that state for 2+ years.
- Employer sponsorship (subclass 482): An alternative route — your employer sponsors you for 2-4 years, then you apply for PR. Faster if you already have a job offer.
- Cost: AUD 4,640 per person for the visa alone. Plus skills assessment (~AUD 500-800), English test (~AUD 400), health exam (~AUD 400), and police clearance. Total: roughly ₹3.5-4 lakh per person.
Key difference: Canada is faster and cheaper for PR. Australia costs roughly 3× more and takes 2-3× longer. If your primary goal is permanent residency, Canada has the clearer path.
Salary and Take-Home Pay
This is where Australia pulls ahead. For the same role, Australian salaries are typically 10-20% higher than Canadian ones, and the effective tax rate is slightly lower.
| Metric | 🇨🇦 Canada | 🇦🇺 Australia |
|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer (mid) | CAD 110K (₹67L) | AUD 120K (₹66L) |
| Software Engineer (senior) | CAD 150K (₹92L) | AUD 170K (₹93L) |
| Nurse (registered) | CAD 80K (₹49L) | AUD 90K (₹50L) |
| Accountant | CAD 70K (₹43L) | AUD 80K (₹44L) |
| Civil Engineer | CAD 85K (₹52L) | AUD 95K (₹52L) |
| Data Scientist | CAD 120K (₹73L) | AUD 130K (₹71L) |
| Minimum Wage (hourly) | CAD 17.20 (₹1,055) | AUD 24.10 (₹1,327) |
After adjusting for purchasing power, the salary difference narrows. Canada's lower rent and groceries offset some of Australia's higher nominal pay. Use our salary calculator to see the exact purchasing power comparison for your income level.

| Daycare (monthly) | CAD 900 (₹55K) | AUD 2,000 (₹1.1L) |
| Healthcare | Free (OHIP/MSP) | Free (Medicare) |
The hidden cost:Childcare in Australia is dramatically more expensive than Canada. If you have young children, this alone can swing the budget by AUD 12,000-15,000/year. Canada also offers the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) — up to CAD 7,437/year per child under 6 — which Australia's system does not fully match.

| Metric | 🇨🇦 Canada | 🇦🇺 Australia |
|---|---|---|
| Indian diaspora size | 3.61 million | 780,000 |
| NRIs (Indian citizens) | 1.75 million | ~200,000 |
| Top Indian-dense cities | Brampton, Surrey, Scarborough | Melbourne, Sydney, Perth |

| Diwali recognition | Federal holiday in some provinces | Major community event |
| Cricket culture | Growing (T20 World Cup 2024) | Deep (BBL, Test cricket) |
| Discrimination reports | Rising (Islamophobia concerns) | Moderate |
Canada's Indian community is nearly 5× larger than Australia's. In cities like Brampton (Ontario), Indians make up over 50% of the population. You can live your entire life in Brampton speaking Punjabi. Melbourne's Indian community is also significant (~200,000) but more dispersed.
Cultural integration:Canada is officially multicultural — the government funds cultural preservation. Australia's approach is more assimilationist but still welcoming. Both countries have Indian MPs, doctors, and business leaders in prominent positions.
Weather and Lifestyle
This is where the comparison gets personal. If you are from Mumbai, Chennai, or any South Indian city, Canada's winters will be a shock.
| Metric | 🇨🇦 Toronto | 🇦🇺 Melbourne |
|---|---|---|
| Winter low | -15°C (Jan) | 6°C (Jul) |
| Summer high | 30°C (Jul) | 35°C (Jan) |
| Sunny days/year | ~306 | ~283 |
| Snow months | Nov–Mar (5 months) | None |
| Beach access | Lake Ontario (cold) | Great Ocean Road (warm) |
| Outdoor lifestyle | Seasonal (ice hockey, skiing) | Year-round (surfing, hiking) |
Australia wins on weather and outdoor lifestyle — period. If you grew up in a warm climate and value outdoor activities, this matters more than most people think. Several Indian expats I've spoken to cite weather as the #1 reason they chose Australia over Canada, and the #1 regret of those who chose Canada.

Both countries need skilled workers, but the demand profiles differ:
- Canada's strengths:IT (Toronto, Vancouver), finance (Toronto), AI/ML research (Montreal), energy (Calgary). Proximity to the US market means many US companies have Canadian offices. Toronto's tech sector is growing faster than any North American city except Austin.
- Australia's strengths: Mining/resources (Perth, Brisbane), healthcare (nationwide shortage), construction (nationwide), fintech (Sydney), cybersecurity (Canberra). Higher base salaries and better minimum wage protections.
- Remote work:Both countries support remote work culture. Canada has more US-adjacent time zones (EST/PST overlap with US clients). Australia's time zones work better for APAC and Indian clients.
Career ceiling:If you want to eventually work for US tech giants, Canada is better positioned. Many Indians in Toronto eventually get L-1 transfers to US offices. Australia's tech scene is growing but smaller, with fewer pathways to US opportunities.
The Verdict: Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Canada if:
- PR certainty and speed are your top priority
- You want the largest Indian community outside India
- You plan to eventually explore US opportunities
- You have young children (better childcare costs + CCB)
- You can handle brutal winters
- Budget is tight (lower immigration costs)
Choose Australia if:
- Salary maximization is your priority
- Weather and outdoor lifestyle matter deeply to you
- You work in healthcare, mining, or construction
- You want to stay closer to India (3-hour time difference vs 10.5-13 hours)
- You value work-life balance culture (4 weeks mandated annual leave)
- Cricket culture is important to you
Consider neither if:
- You want zero income tax → look at the UAE
- You want proximity to India at low cost → look at Singapore or Malaysia
- You want free education + affordable Europe → look at Germany

Compare all 95 countries for your prioritiesFrequently Asked Questions
Which country is cheaper to immigrate to from India?▾
Canada is significantly cheaper. PR application costs roughly ₹1.2-1.5 lakh per person (including all fees), while Australia costs ₹3.5-4 lakh per person. Canada also doesn't require a mandatory skills assessment fee for most occupations.
Can I switch from Canada PR to Australia PR later?▾
Yes, but you'd need to apply to Australia independently — Canadian PR doesn't give you any advantage in Australia's points system. Some people use Canada PR as a stepping stone, gaining international experience and then applying to Australia. Note that Canadian citizenship (available after 3 years) gives you a slight edge as it demonstrates settlement stability.
Which country is better for Indian IT professionals?▾
Both are excellent. Canada (Toronto, Vancouver) has a larger tech sector with more US-adjacent opportunities and faster PR processing. Australia (Sydney, Melbourne) offers higher base salaries and better work-life balance. If salary is priority: Australia. If PR speed and career optionality are priority: Canada.
Is the Indian food scene comparable?▾
Canada wins by a large margin, especially in Brampton, Surrey, and Scarborough where you can find every regional Indian cuisine. Australia's Indian food scene is growing (especially in Melbourne) but smaller and less diverse. Both countries have Indian grocery stores in major cities.
Which is safer for Indian families?▾
Both are safe. Canada scores 83/100 on our safety index vs Australia's 79/100. Canada has lower crime rates overall but weather-related risks (extreme cold, driving conditions). Australia has higher UV exposure and some wildlife concerns. Both countries have excellent police and emergency services.
Can my spouse work in both countries?▾
Yes. In Canada, your spouse gets an open work permit with your PR application — they can work for any employer. In Australia, your partner gets a dependent visa with work rights on subclass 190/189. Both countries allow spouse work from day one of PR.
