What happened to Canada’s “lifeboat” scheme?▾
The recent-graduate open work permit scheme was ended on February 7, 2025. Existing Stream A/B permanent residence applicants remain in processing — ~34,000 total applications with ~11,750 approved by April 30, 2025. Most new applications are expected to be processed after 2027 due to the backlog.
Is the Taiwan Gold Card realistic for Hongkongers?▾
Yes for skilled professionals. Taiwan’s Gold Card is a 4-in-1 combined resident visa, work permit, residence certificate, and re-entry permit. HK/Macau residents get a special fee of NT$3,100 (significantly lower than standard). The card is valid 1–3 years, offers a 50% tax deduction for 3 years, and pathway to PR after 3 years. Eligibility runs across 12 professional fields defined by the Act for the Recruitment & Employment of Foreign Professional Talent.
How does Australia compare in 2026?▾
Australia maintains subclass 191 (Regional) and standard skilled-visa pathways open to Hongkongers. Note: foreign investors are banned from purchasing established residential properties between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2027, so property-led migration is effectively closed; new-build purchases and skilled visas remain the path.
