The biggest pet-relocation mistake is starting too late. A rabies antibody (titer) test plus its mandatory waiting period can add 3 months (EU/UK) or 180 days (Australia/Japan) — so for some moves you must begin 7 months ahead. Pick your destination and where your pet is coming from to get the sequenced steps, cited to the official animal authority. Decision support, not a customs guarantee.

Start ahead: at least 4–5 months
Quarantine: No routine quarantine if all requirements are met (the 3-month wait substitutes for quarantine for non-listed origins). Non-compliant animals may be refused entry, returned, or isolated under official supervision — at the owner's cost.
Quarantine: No routine quarantine for compliant pets. Incomplete or incorrect documentation can mean quarantine or refusal of entry / return — all costs paid by the owner.
Start ahead: at least ~7 months (only via an approved country)
Quarantine: MANDATORY on-arrival government quarantine at the Mickleham post-entry facility: minimum 10 days if the identity check was done before the RNATT, otherwise minimum 30 days. Cannot be avoided from a Group 2/3 country.
Quarantine: No facility quarantine on arrival (cleared within ~12 hours) IF every requirement is met — above all that the full 180 days have elapsed since the blood draw. Any shortfall is served as detention quarantine (up to 180 days).
Quarantine: None — CFIA does not subject imported personal pet dogs or cats to post-import quarantine, provided documentation is complete and correctly presented at the border.
Quarantine: None for compliant pets — examined at the entry port on arrival and released once the import-permit conditions are verified. Non-compliant shipments may face penalties, re-export, or quarantine.
