- LGBTQ+ safety
- Full marriage equality. Exceptionally safe, liberal, and welcoming, particularly in Lisbon and Porto. Rural areas are conservative but peaceful.
- Driving & licensing
- Drives on the right. Driving style is assertive. You can usually swap a US/UK license for a Portuguese one via IMT without retaking exams, if done within 90 days of residency.
- Healthcare system
- The public SNS system is deeply strained, so most expats utilize the highly affordable, English-speaking private network (CUF, Hospital da Luz) costing around €50-100/month.
- Walkability & transit
- Lisbon and Porto have decent core transit but are incredibly hilly with traditional cobblestones (calçada) that can be slippery. A car is almost mandatory outside major cities.
