Safety
Very safe overall. Gorlitzer Park has a persistent drug scene but is more annoying than dangerous. Standard bike theft precautions (double lock) are essential. Public transport is safe at all hours.
Healthcare
German healthcare is excellent but navigating public (gesetzliche) vs private (private) insurance is critical. Public insurance (TK, AOK, Barmer) is mandatory for employees under EUR 69,300/year. Freiberufler (freelancers) can choose either. English-speaking doctors are easy to find via Doctolib.
Internet & Connectivity
Germany's internet infrastructure is notoriously worse than you'd expect — VDSL (50-100 Mbps) is still common. Fibre is expanding but check exact availability at your address. Telekom and Vodafone are the main providers.
Coworking
Enormous. Factory Berlin, Betahaus, and St. Oberholz are the iconic spaces. WeWork has multiple locations. Neukolln and Kreuzberg are densely packed with smaller indie spaces. EUR 150-300/mo for hot desks.
Food & Dining
Mustafa's Gemuse Kebap in Kreuzberg has legendary queues for a reason. Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg hosts Street Food Thursday. Curry 36 for currywurst. Turkish breakfast in Neukolln (try Roamers or Five Elephant for third-wave coffee). Berlin's Vietnamese food scene is exceptional — Monsieur Vuong or Co Chu.
Climate Notes
Continental — cold, grey winters (-5 to 5°C, November-March) and surprisingly warm summers (25-35°C). Daylight swings dramatically: 16+ hours in June, barely 8 in December. Seasonal depression is real.
