What life in Fiji is actually like
Daily rhythm and cultural texture
Fiji runs on 'Fiji time' — a phrase locals use without irony. Meetings start late, deadlines are flexible, and the word 'bula' (hello, welcome, life) is spoken with a sincerity that recalibrates your understanding of greeting culture. Suva, the capital, is lush and rain-soaked on the windward side of Viti Levu — expect 3,000mm of rain annually and an umbrella permanently in your bag. The municipal market in Suva is the social crossroads: Indo-Fijian spice vendors next to indigenous Fijian root crop sellers, with the fish section offering the morning's reef catch. Nadi and Denarau on the dry western side attract more tourists and retirees — the sun actually appears regularly there. Village life still governs much of the social fabric; sevusevu (a kava presentation ceremony) is required when visiting any village, and the communal kava circle is where real conversation happens. Saturday is rugby day — Fiji Sevens matches bring the country to a standstill, and the 2016 Olympic gold medal remains a defining national moment. Food blends Melanesian and Indian traditions: kokoda (raw fish in coconut cream) sits alongside roti and curry at most tables. The indo-Fijian population contributes a rich layer of Hindu and Muslim traditions, temples, and festivals. Cyclone season runs November through April — Winston in 2016 was Category 5 and fundamentally reshaped disaster preparedness on the islands.
Who thrives here — and who struggles
Marine biologists, dive professionals, and ocean conservationists find unparalleled access to pristine reef systems and research opportunities. Retirees from Australia and New Zealand benefit from proximity, familiar English-speaking culture, and a cost of living substantially below home. Remote workers who prioritize natural beauty and slow living over urban stimulation can build a deeply satisfying rhythm here. NGO professionals working in Pacific Island climate adaptation and development use Suva as the regional base. Fiji is decidedly wrong for career climbers, urban culture enthusiasts, or anyone who measures quality of life by restaurant variety and nightlife options. Those with medical conditions requiring specialist care should think carefully — the nearest MRI machine is in Suva, and specialist referrals often mean flights to Auckland or Sydney.
Reality check: the first 6 months
Work permit applications require your employer to prove no Fijian citizen could fill the role, and the Department of Immigration takes this seriously — rejected applications are common, particularly for roles that could plausibly be filled locally. Rental housing in Suva and Nadi operates through word of mouth and local agents; there is no reliable online listing platform. Shipping personal belongings from overseas attracts duties that can approach 50% of declared value for electronics and vehicles. Internet connectivity has improved with the Southern Cross NEXT cable, but speeds outside Suva and Nadi remain inconsistent. The sevusevu protocol is not optional — arriving in a village without presenting a bundle of dried kava root to the chief is a genuine social transgression that will follow you.

What works well here
- ✓Stunning natural beauty with world-class diving and beaches
- ✓No capital gains tax and favorable tax rates
- ✓English is an official language and widely spoken
- ✓Warm, welcoming Fijian culture
Friction to expect
- !Vulnerability to cyclones and climate change impacts
- !Limited healthcare facilities requiring medical evacuation for serious conditions

Practical nuances
- LGBTQ+ safety
- Homosexuality was decriminalized in 2010 and the constitution prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. Fiji is relatively progressive for the Pacific, though social attitudes remain conservative in rural areas.
- Driving & licensing
- Drives on the left. Road conditions vary; main highways on Viti Levu are paved, but many rural and island roads are unpaved. International licenses are valid for 6 months; longer residents must obtain a local license.
- Healthcare system
- A public system provides free care at government hospitals and health centers. Private medical facilities are limited. The Fiji National University trains healthcare workers, but specialist shortages persist.
- Walkability & transit
- Suva and Nadi are navigable by foot in central areas. Buses and minivans connect towns on the main islands. Inter-island travel relies on domestic flights and ferries. There is no rail system.

About Fiji
Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an archipelagic country in Melanesia, part of Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies about 1,100 nautical miles north-northeast of New Zealand. Fiji consists of an archipelago of more than 330 islands—of which about 110 are permanently inhabited—and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of about 18,300 square kilometres (7,100 sq mi). The most outlying island group is Ono-i-Lau. About 87% of the total population live on the two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. About three-quarters of Fijians live on Viti Levu's coasts, either in the capital city of Suva, or in smaller urban centres such as Nadi or Lautoka. The interior of Viti Levu is sparsely inhabited because of its terrain.
