Safety
One of the safest megacities on earth. You can leave a laptop in a cafe and it will be there when you return. Violent crime is negligible. Earthquakes are the main natural hazard — all buildings are earthquake-resistant.
Healthcare
Excellent healthcare system. National Health Insurance covers 70% of costs (mandatory for residents). St. Luke's International Hospital and the University of Tokyo Hospital are top-tier. A doctor visit costs $10-30 with insurance. English-speaking doctors are available but not ubiquitous.
Internet & Connectivity
World-class. NTT, SoftBank, and au offer fiber at 1-2 Gbps for $30-50/mo. Pocket WiFi rental is popular for short-term stays ($40-60/mo). Free WiFi in convenience stores and stations.
Coworking
Extensive. WeWork, Regus, and local chains like Fabbit and BIZcomfort. Shibuya and Roppongi are the startup hubs. $200-400/mo for hot desks. Kissaten (retro cafes) are a unique Japanese alternative for quiet work.
Food & Dining
The world's most Michelin-starred city. Tsukiji Outer Market (still active) for sushi breakfast. Ramen at Fuunji (Shinjuku) or Afuri (Ebisu). Yakitori alley under Yurakucho tracks. Depachika (department store basement food halls) are mind-blowing. Conveyor belt sushi at Sushiro or Kura for incredible quality at $1-2/plate. Izakayas in Golden Gai (Shinjuku) for the quintessential Tokyo experience.
Climate Notes
Four distinct seasons. Hot, humid summers (June-September, 30-38°C with typhoon season). Cold winters (December-February, 0-10°C). Cherry blossom season (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November) are magical. Rainy season (tsuyu) in June is dreary.
