Could your ancestry open a citizenship route?
Not legal advice. This checks the stated ancestral routes, not every way to become a citizen. Confirm your documents with the official authority before acting. Dates stay in this form; shared results contain only a country, verdict and public source.
Official rules for each country
Italy
Law 74/2025: for someone born abroad with another citizenship, Article 3-bis requires an exception: an exclusively Italian parent/grandparent (currently or at death), a parent’s two continuous years of residence in Italy after acquiring citizenship and before your birth, or a protected pre-cutoff file. An unbroken transmission chain still matters.
Ireland
A citizen parent born on the island of Ireland can transmit citizenship automatically. An Irish-born grandparent can support Foreign Births Registration (FBR). For a more distant ancestor, your parent must already have been an Irish citizen before your birth; FBR citizenship starts on registration.
Poland
The province governor confirms possession or loss of Polish citizenship from evidence of the applicant and ancestors. Birthplace, generation count and a foreign naturalisation date alone do not prove continuous transmission under historical laws.
Germany
StAG §5 allows a declaration for qualifying gender-discriminatory non-transmission to children born after 23 May 1949 and their descendants, within the statutory declaration window. StAG §15 covers specified Nazi-persecution losses or denial of citizenship and descendants. Ordinary descent is a separate chain assessment.
Hungary
Simplified naturalisation requires a former Hungarian-citizen ancestor or evidenced Hungarian origin, sufficient Hungarian communication, and criminal-record/security conditions. This is an application route, not automatic citizenship from a birthplace.
Lithuania
Reinstatement requires evidence that an ancestor held Lithuanian citizenship before 15 June 1940 and proof of descent. Dual citizenship depends on qualifying exile/departure exceptions before 11 March 1990; renunciation may otherwise be required. Birth in Lithuania alone is not citizenship proof.
Greece
Descent from a Greek parent is recognised through municipal registration. More distant ancestry needs a documented lineage and competent-authority assessment; the appropriate process can differ if a parent was not registered or became Greek after your birth.
Portugal
A Portuguese parent supports a child’s nationality declaration. A grandparent must be Portuguese by origin and not have lost nationality; the grandchild must declare intent, know Portuguese and meet criminal-record/security conditions. More distant lines require individual analysis.
Spain
Article 20(1)(b) permits an option where a parent was originally Spanish and born in Spain, without an age limit for that option. New LMD appointment requests closed on 22 October 2025. Protected in-window files need consular assessment; residence-based and other routes are separate.
