Multiple languages from 18 months to 18 years The DSS is the largest German cultural hub in Shanghai. However, it sees itself as a place for German expats to meet and befriend people from China and all the other nations that make up our school’s diverse community. Although our main focus is on German language and culture, we place great emphasis on teaching our students multiple languages so that they are as well-equipped as possible to study and work all over the world. The DSS offers five languages in total – Chinese, German, English, French and Latin. Abitur examinations can be taken in German, English, French or Chinese. The school also offers preparatory classes for the internationally recognized Cambridge English Qualifications for non-native speakers of English. With the foreign languages offered at DSS and the option of English-language geography classes and bilingual history classes, up to 42% of lessons in the Gymnasium programme leading up to the Abitur can be in a language other than German.
Every child is always treated as an individual. Available to all age groups, our individually tailored German as a Second Language, dyslexia, speech therapy, physical therapy, extra reading and writing assistance and inclusive activity programmes are adapted to each child’s specific needs and capabilities. Differentiated teaching, language classes for different proficiency levels and bilingual lessons from Year 7 on ensure that all our students are challenged in accordance with their abilities.
