Brexit removed automatic EU residency rights; the D7, golden-visa replacement, and digital-nomad routes now apply equally to UK applicants. Common blockers
- ISAs lose their UK tax shelter once you become a Portuguese tax resident — they're taxed as ordinary investment income there.
- UK state pension is taxable in Portugal under the treaty, with a foreign-tax-credit on the UK side.
- NHR regime closed; IFICI replacement is narrower and excludes most retirees.
- Bringing a UK pension into a QROPS / IORPS scheme has different consequences pre- vs. post-residency.

Time the residency switch around your tax year
Becoming a Portuguese resident mid-UK-tax-year creates split-year treatment. Co-ordinating the switch with your highest-income event (RSU vest, bonus, pension lump sum) can save five-figure sums or cost them.

Retirees and dividend-income earners typically fit the D7. Active remote employees from a UK employer fit the digital-nomad route; the requirements differ on minimum income and physical presence.

British curriculum continuity is well-supported in Portugal
British schools in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve run the UK national curriculum through GCSE / A-Level. If continuity matters, the British curriculum bridge is the smoothest available.
4. Property
Algarve vs. Lisbon — different markets, different timelines
Algarve is a destination market (high seasonality, slower closes). Lisbon and Porto are urban markets with faster closes but tighter inventory. The same buyer profile gets very different timing.
